抵抗せずに何かに負けたり屈したりすること。主に病気や誘惑、強いプレッシャーに対して使います。

フォーマルや文学的な場面で使われる語です。「succumb to temptation」「succumb to illness」など定型句によく登場します。日常会話では「give in」や「give up」の方が一般的です。些細なことには使いません。

He succumbs to his fears and cannot speak in public.
