表面のすぐ下にあるものや存在する層を指します。特に地面や水の下層に使われ、見える表層の下にあるものを表します。

主に科学や工学分野で使われます。'subsurface layers'や'subsurface water'のような表現でよく使われ、日常会話ではあまり使われません。
