Bir şeyin büyük ölçüde veya önemli derecede olduğunu ifade eder. Bazen 'esas olarak' veya 'çoğunlukla' anlamında da kullanılır.

Daha çok resmi ya da akademik metinlerde kullanılır. 'increase', 'reduce', 'change', 'differ' gibi fiillerden sonra sık gelir ve büyük değişim vurgular. Günlük konuşmada nadiren görülür.
