매우 진지하고 엄격하게, 때로는 권위나 불만을 표현할 때 쓰인다.

'엄하게'는 주로 '말하다', '보다', '대답하다'와 같은 동사와 함께 사용됨. 'firmly'보다 더 공식적이고, 'harshly'보다는 덜 거칠다.

The teacher spoke sternly to the noisy students.
