시에서 줄들이 모여 하나의 의미나 리듬을 이루며 띄어쓰기로 구분되는 부분.

‘연’은 시에서 자주 분석 대상으로 쓰임. 각 연마다 운율이나 리듬이 다를 수 있음. ‘verse’와 혼동하지 않도록 주의. 복수형은 '연들' 등으로 표현됨.
