二つの側が譲らず、状況が進展せずに膠着すること。対立や交渉の場面でよく使われる表現。

多くの場合、名詞として使われる。ニュースや警察、政治の文脈でよく出る語。'stand up to'とは異なり、相手に立ち向かう意味ではない。

There was a stand off between the two teams.

二つのチームの間で**にらみ合い**があった。
