この表現は、人を支えたり、すぐに行動できるよう待機したり、ただ見ているだけの場合に使います。

'stand by someone' は支援する意。'Please stand by' は待機する、準備する意味。'just stand by' は傍観する、何もしないニュアンス。'standby'（名詞・形容詞）とは異なるので注意。
