「スフィンクス」の複数形。ライオンの身体と人間の顔を持つ神話上または像の生き物で、古代エジプトやギリシャの伝承・遺跡でよく見られる。

主に歴史や神話、考古学の文脈で使われます。「sphinxes」は複数体の像または伝説上の存在を指します。日常会話ではあまり使いません。
