炎や明かりを消すこと。また、希望や命などを完全に終わらせることにも使います。

'snuff out a candle'は「ろうそくを消す」、'snuff out hope'は「希望を断つ」のように使います。比喩的に使う場合は深刻な状況に用いることが多いです。
