何かが明るい背景の前で暗い輪郭や形だけが浮かび上がって見える様子を表します。中の細部は見えません。

Usage Notes (Japanese)

文学的や芸術的な表現でよく使われます。「...を背景にシルエットで浮かぶ」という形が一般的です。内部の詳細が見える場合には使いません。
