把某事（尤其是想法、计划或项目）暂时搁置，日后再处理。也可以指把东西放到架子上。

在商务和正式场合经常用来表示暂时搁置某事（如“shelve a project”）。比“put on hold”更正式。也可指将东西放到架子上，但这个用法较少。不要和“shelf”（名词）混淆。
