敬意を示すために、特に軍隊のように手を額に当てる仕草や、改まって挨拶や敬意を表すこと。

Usage Notes (Japanese)

主に軍隊やフォーマルな場面で使う言葉。『旗に敬礼した』『将校に敬礼した』などの定型表現が多い。カジュアルな挨拶（手を振る、うなずく）と混同しないこと。
