誰かに挨拶するための言葉やフレーズで、特に手紙やスピーチの冒頭に使います。また、あいさつそのものの行為を指すこともあります。

「salutation」は手紙やメールなどの文章で用いられるフォーマルな挨拶言葉です。「Dear Sir」などが例です。会話では「greeting」がより自然です。「salute」（敬礼）と間違えないよう注意。
