Definition

長い間放置された物が、細菌やカビなどによってゆっくりと腐ってボロボロになること。特に食べ物や木材などに使われます。

Usage Notes (Japanese)

口語的。食べ物や木材など「目に見えるもの」の腐敗に使うが、時に夢や希望など抽象的にも使える。「let something rot away」はわざと放置する場合に使う。

If you leave fruit outside, it will rot away.
