恐れや驚き、嫌悪感から何かからすぐに後ずさること。また、不快または困難なことを避けるときにも使う。

Usage Notes (Japanese)

やや堅い表現。実際の動作（蛇からひるむ）や比喩表現（責任からひるむ）両方に使う。後ろに名詞や動名詞が来ることが多い。
