본의 아니게 부적절하거나 민망한 말을 해버려서 어색한 상황을 만드는 것.

가볍고 비공식적인 상황에서 자주 사용된다. 실수로 상대방을 불편하게 하는 말을 했을 때 쓴다. 공식적인 글에는 잘 쓰이지 않는다.
