Gerçek olmayan bir durumu gerçek gibi göstermek ya da gerçek duyguları veya niyeti gizlemek için yapılan davranış ya da görünüşe denir.

Daha çok resmi ve yazılı dilde kullanılır. 'Under the pretence of' ifadesi sahte bir nedenle yapılan işleri belirtir.
