Definition

本当ではないことを本当のように見せかけたり、気持ちや本音を隠すためにふるまったりすることです。見せかけ、偽りの行動や態度も含みます。

Usage Notes (Japanese)

フォーマルな文章や話し言葉で使われます。「under the pretence of～」は「～するふりをして」という表現になります。アメリカ英語の“pretense”と意味は同じ。
