Normalmente se escribe con mayúscula como título: 'el Papa' o 'el papa Francisco'. Se refiere específicamente al jefe de la Iglesia católica romana, no a líderes cristianos en general. En noticias e historia, aparece mucho con verbos como 'elegir', 'visitar', 'reunirse con' y 'bendecir'.
