삶, 지식, 행동 방식에 대한 사상이나 신념 체계, 또는 존재와 현실의 근본에 대해 연구하는 학문을 의미한다.

‘philosophy’의 복수형이다. 공식적, 학문적이거나 사색적인 상황에서 자주 사용된다. 개인적 신념부터 체계적인 사상 체계까지 모두 표현할 때 쓴다.
