腹膜炎とは、腹部の内側を覆う薄い膜（腹膜）が感染やけがによって炎症を起こす重い病気です。

「腹膜炎」は医療現場で使われる正式な用語で、日常会話ではあまり使いません。腹膜だけの炎症を指し、他の腹部疾患には使いません。
