お城や要塞の周りを囲む、たいてい水が入った深くて広い溝のこと。

主に歴史的な建築物で使われますが、現代では比喩的に（ビジネスの優位性など）も使われます。「cross the moat」は障害を乗り越えるという意味で使われます。

The castle had a deep moat around it.
