人や動物に対して残酷に、不公平に、または害を与えるように扱うこと。

フォーマルまたは中立的な表現で使われます。'mistreat children' や 'mistreat animals' のように虐待や不当な扱いについて特によく使います。'misunderstand'（誤解する）とは意味が違います。
