Definition

誰かの言葉や意図を間違った意味で受け取ること。とくに本来意図されたこととは違う意味に取る場合。

Usage Notes (Japanese)

やや硬い表現で、書き言葉や丁寧な会話で使われることが多い。「misunderstand」よりも、特定の意味や意図を不自然に読み違える場合に使う。「〜の言葉／意図を誤解する」と結びつきやすい。
