期待よりも長くその場にとどまったり、感情や匂い、記憶などが残り続けたりすること。
Usage Notes (Japanese)
主に感情や匂い、人が期待以上に長く残る時に使う。'linger in the air' や 'linger over' のような表現とよく使われる。急いでいる場面や活動的な滞在には使わない。

The sweet smell lingers in the kitchen after baking.
