争いや問題がある人同士の間に入って、仲直りを助けることや、代わってお願いをすること。

Usage Notes (Japanese)

フォーマルまたは文学的な表現で、日常会話ではあまり使われません。「〜のために仲裁する」「権威者に取りなす」などの表現で使います。「介入する」（intervene）よりも柔らかく間に入るニュアンスがあります。
