철학, 문학, 과학, 예술 등에서 지식과 사상에 몰두하는 사람들을 말합니다.

‘지식인’은 주로 교육받고 사회적 논의나 문화에 영향을 주는 사람들을 지칭합니다. 'public intellectual', 'intellectual elite'와 함께 자주 쓰입니다. 대학 연구자(academics)와는 구분됩니다.
