ほのめかしとは、直接的ではなく、遠回しに否定的なことを示唆する発言のことです。よく疑いをかけたり批判したりする目的で使われます。

「ほのめかし」はフォーマル・セミフォーマルな場面でよく使われ、ずる賢い批判というニュアンスがあります。「make insinuations」「spread insinuations」などの表現と一緒によく使われます。「innuendo（性的なニュアンス）」や「implication（中立的）」と混同しないよう注意。
