No Japão, 'hibachi' refere-se a um aquecedor de carvão, e não a um grelhador para cozinhar. No Ocidente, designa normalmente uma grelha pequena ou um restaurante japonês do tipo 'hibachi grill'. Costuma ser confundido com 'teppanyaki', que é uma chapa de ferro plana onde se cozinha à frente dos clientes.
