진짜 목적이나 본질을 숨기기 위해 겉으로 드러나는 모습이나 역할. 주로 속이기 위해 사용됨.

'가장'은 남을 속이기 위한 겉모습이나 역할에 쓰임. '가면'처럼 실제 물리적인 마스크가 아님. '가장하여', '가장한~'처럼 사용.
