개나 동물이 누군가나 무언가에 불쾌감이나 경고를 표현하기 위해 낮고 화난 소리를 내는 것.

대체로 개나 동물에게 사용하지만, 사람이 화난 어조로 말할 때도 비유적으로 사용됨. 'growl at someone'은 상대에게 짜증이나 불쾌감을 표현할 때 쓰임. 'snarl at'보다 덜 공격적.
