Definition

物の表面を薄い金で覆うこと、または本来以上に見た目を美しく、価値あるもののように見せること。

今では物理的に金を塗る意味よりも比喩的な使われ方（‘gild the lily’=必要以上に飾る）が多い。人や事実を過度に良く見せる意図にも使われる。
