特定ではなく、広く多くの場合に当てはまることを表します。また、軍の高い地位の指導者を指すこともあります。

Usage Notes (Japanese)

多くの場合、形容詞として「general idea」「general rule」のような表現で使われます。名詞の場合は軍の指導者を指します。「in general」とは別の意味なので注意してください。
