দীর্ঘ ও সরু ফাটল বা চিড়, বিশেষ করে পাথর, দেয়াল বা চামড়ার মধ্যে দেখা যায়। সাধারণত একাধিক ফাটল বোঝাতে ব্যবহৃত হয়।

বিজ্ঞান, চিকিৎসা বা ভূতাত্ত্বিক আলোচনায় এই শব্দটি বেশি ব্যবহৃত হয়। সাধারণ কথোপকথনে 'crack' বা 'split' ব্যবহার হয়। 'fissures' শব্দটি সাধারণত গভীর বা গুরুতর ফাটলের ক্ষেত্রে ব্যবহৃত হয়।
