어떤 집단, 나라, 이념을 대표하거나 상징하는 그림, 디자인, 물체를 말한다. 특정 의미나 가치, 개념을 표현하는 데에도 쓰인다.

'상징'이나 '문장'은 국가, 기관, 사상 등 공식적 의미에서 자주 쓰임. 'national emblem', 'emblem of peace' 사용법에 주의. 'logo' (회사 로고), 'badge' (배지)와는 용도가 다름.
