森林から大量の木を切り倒して取り除くこと。多くの場合、農業や建設のために行われる。

主に環境や科学の記事で使う言葉です。「deforest an area」は「地域の森林を伐採する」の意味。「reforest（再植林）」と混同しないように。意図的な大規模伐採を指します。
