Definition

イベントや打ち上げの直前に時間を知らせるため、数字をゼロまで逆に数えること。

Usage Notes (Japanese)

打ち上げ、年越し、競技など特別な瞬間に使われます。普通の待ち時間には使いません。「the countdown begins」は「カウントダウンが始まる」という意味です。
