주로 학교나 교도소에서 벌로 회초리(막대기)로 맞는 것.

영국식 영어에서 주로 사용하는 역사적·공식적 표현입니다. 자발적으로 지팡이를 사용하는 것과는 다르며, 반드시 벌로 맞는 상황에만 씁니다. 대부분 수동형('was caned')으로 쓰입니다. 미국식 영어에서는 드뭅니다.
