誰かに極端な残酷さや暴力で接し、大きな苦しみや痛みを与えること。また、厳しい扱いによって人を無感覚や残酷にしてしまう意味もある。

Usage Notes (Japanese)

主に虐待や極端な暴力に関する正式な場面で使われます。日常会話ではめったに使いません。「beating」や「hurting」よりも重い意味です。
