何かが本当とは違う印象を与えたり、実際とは異なることを示す時に使う言葉です。

主に書き言葉で使われます。「appearance」「smile」「expression」「reputation」などとよく一緒に使われます。表面と本当の状態が違う時に使用します。「deny」と混同しないように注意してください。
