「be up」は、目が覚めている、時間や順番が終わる、または自分の番が来ることなど、文脈によって意味が変わる表現です。

文脈によって「be up」の意味が変わります。「I was up early」は起きていた、「Time is up!」は時間切れ、「You're up next!」は次はあなたの番、など。挨拶の「What's up?」とは別の表現です。

I was up until midnight studying.
