裏階段は家の裏側にある階段で、昔は使用人がよく使いました。比喩的には、秘密裏に行われる不正な行為のことも指します。

Usage Notes (Japanese)

実際の裏階段は古い大きな家が中心です。比喩で使われる場合、“backstairs politics”のように陰謀や秘密のニュアンスになります。日常会話ではあまり使いません。
