아주 창백하거나 잿빛인 색을 뜻하며, 주로 충격이나 두려움, 병, 죽음 등으로 얼굴이나 피부에 나타난다.

대부분 두려움, 충격, 병 등으로 안색이 창백할 때 사용하며, 일상보다는 문학적 표현에 가깝다. 'ashen face'는 '창백한 얼굴' 의미로 자주 나온다.
