인간과 유사한 특징을 지니거나, 고릴라, 침팬지, 오랑우탄처럼 인간을 닮은 유인원을 일컫는 말입니다.

주로 학술, 동물학, SF 분야에서 사용됩니다. 유인원뿐 아니라 인간과 비슷하게 생긴 로봇이나 존재에도 씁니다. 일상대화에서는 드물게 사용됩니다.
