Một loại than đá cứng, bóng, cháy ít khói và tỏa ra nhiều nhiệt. Thường được dùng để sưởi và trong sản xuất công nghiệp.

Thường xuất hiện trong ngữ cảnh chuyên ngành địa chất, năng lượng hoặc sưởi ấm. Ít khi dùng trong giao tiếp hàng ngày. Không nên nhầm với 'than bitum', loại mềm và sinh nhiều khói hơn.
