특별히 투표나 어떤 활동에 참여하지 않기로 자발적으로 결정하는 것. 주로 도덕적이거나 개인적인 이유로 사용된다.

'자제하다', '삼가다'는 공식적, 법적, 정치적 맥락에서 자주 쓰임(예: 'abstain from voting'=투표를 삼가다/참여하지 않다). 일상적인 피함에는 다른 표현을 사용.
