Definition

地面に掘られた深くて細長い溝、特に戦争時の防御目的で作られるもの。他には実用目的で掘られる溝も含む。

Usage Notes (Japanese)

軍事用語としてよく使われます（主に第一次世界大戦「塹壕戦」）。構築、排水、庭仕事でも使います。比喩的に「the trenches」は苦労している最前線の意味。'ditch'（小さな溝）とは区別します。
