他の人が去った後にその場に残ること、または他の人についていけず遅れること。

主に学校や会議の後に残る時や、他の人より遅れる時に使われます。「stay behind after class」などの表現でよく出ます。フォーマルではなく丁寧です。

I have to stay behind after school for extra help.
