아주 더럽고 불쾌한 상태를 말하며, 주로 가난이나 방치로 인해 발생합니다. 도덕적으로 타락한 의미도 있습니다.

공식적·글에서 사람 사는 곳이 매우 더럽고 열악할 때 ('squalid conditions', 'squalid apartment') 사용합니다. 단순히 조금 지저분할 때 쓰지 않습니다.
