Definition
驚きや混乱で言葉が途切れ途切れになったり、何か（エンジンやろうそくなど）が不規則な音を立てること。
Usage Notes (Japanese)
主に砕けた会話や、驚き・混乱した時の突然の話し方や、エンジン・炎の不規則な音に使う。'stutter'（吃音）とは区別して使うこと。
Examples
The boy splutters when he tries to answer quickly.
